You asked, and we answered! Our Frequently Asked Questions cover the topics parents ask about.
WHEN CAN I SIGN UP FOR LESSONS?
Anytime! Our Swimmattix programs runs throughout the year. Please fill in our online form under "join us" to start the process of joining the Swimmattix family.
WHAT AGE SHOULD MY CHILD START SWIMMING?
Our swim lessons are available for children 3 weeks and up. No matter what age your child is, it is NEVER too late to start swim lessons. Our lessons are designed to teach children of all ages and abilities.
WHAT ARE YOUR OFFICE HOURS?
Swimmattix is run from our 7 Libertas Pool in Pinelands : Weekdays 09h00 - 15h00
WHAT HAPPENS IF MY CHILD CRIES?
It is common for most children to cry. This is a normal reaction. Our teachers are highly trained in these situations. Pulling a child out of swim lessons due to crying is never a recommended course of action. Usually the crying phase is much harder on the parent than it is on the child. If your child is crying, it is best to get out of the line of sight from your child so they are able to better focus on the instructor.
WHAT IF MY CHILD DOESN'T LIKE THE LESSON? SHOULD I STOP?
Please do not begin our program unless you fully intend to finish. We do everything we can to make learning to swim an enjoyable experience for your child. Many children take a few weeks to work through their feelings about the water. It is a new environment where they are being asked to work very hard without Mom or Dad. Some amount of resistance is to be expected during the learning process. Please remember that it is not learning how to swim that's fun, but knowing how to swim that's fun.
HOW MUCH DOES A LESSON COST?
Please have a look under "our fees" for a full price list for the year.
WHAT LANGUAGE IS USED IN YOUR LESSONS?
Swimmattix is an English speaking swim school, our certificates and all lines of communication are done in English however our teachers are more than willing to speak in Afrikaans if they are able too (please note, not all our teacher can speak Afrikaans, if this is a deciding factor please let us know before booking & we will do our best to book your child with a Teacher who is fluent in Afrikaans.)
If your child requires to be taught in a language your child's teacher is not fluent in, please help them to with the basic words to help your child understand what is required. A good balance between words and visuals will still allow your child to progress through the Swimmattix Levels at a steady pace.
DO YOU GUYS OFFER A TRIAL LESSON?
Because swimming shouldn't be seen like "other sports" or an "extra-mural" in the end it is a life skill that shouldn't be compared. Parents must remember being in a pool (sometimes for the first time ever), in a new environment and with a stranger, some children take longer to adapt than others. We at Swimmattix believe that one lesson is no indication on ours or your child's ability. We pinky promise will get your child swimming and we will also work through any issues he/she might have so they will swim and love doing it at the same time, but the only way for this to happen is for our parents to have 100% trust in our abilities to do this and to work 100% with us.
ARE YOUR POOLS HEATED?
Yes! All our pools are indoors and heated to STA teaching standards. All our pools are heated to 33 - 34 degrees all year round.
WHEN DO THE HEATERS OUTSIDE THE POOL/POOL AREA GET TURNED ON?
Heater on pool deck get turned on during the colder months, you will find our pool areas VERY warm throughout the year and through the summer months we also have fans on pool deck help the parents to not over heat ;) so... heaters outside of the pool are only really required when it is a real freezing day in CT. (We ask that parents do not fiddle with these heaters and rather ask a Teacher for assistance.)
IS YOUR POOLS SALT WATER OR CHLORINATED?
Our pools are chlorinated to provide your child with the optimal hygienic environment. Click here for more information.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD MY CHILD ATTEND SWIMMING LESSONS?
We recommend most students attend one to two (if your budget allows) swimming lessons per week. Skill development requires regular practice. So they more your child swims the better.
DO WE GET A DISCOUNT IF WE HAVE MORE THAN ONE CHILD?
Effective 01 April 2018, we now offer a discounted rate to our clients with more than one sibling. Please speak to our offices about this discount, this applies to clients who join from April 2018 only.
WILL WE HAVE THE SAME SWIMMING TEACHER EVERY WEEK?
Yes. Your child will gain confidence and learn the best by having the same teacher. However teachers are human too and do get sick at times, all Swimmattix teachers are trained the same so even if your normal teacher is missing that week, your child is able to carry on where they he/she left off the week before.
DO YOU USE FLOTATION DEVICES IN YOUR LESSONS?
No. At Swimmattix, we provide a learning environment without the use of flotation devices to ensure your child develops mobility and buoyancy independently.
WILL I GET INTO THE POOL WITH MY CHILD?
Baby Classes from 0 - 18 months require you as a parent to get into the pool. Our Learn to Swim classes (18 months and older) are one-on-one lessons without Mom/Dad.
MY CHILD DOES NOT REQUIRE A PARENT IN THE CLASS BUT CAN I STILL GET INTO THE WATER WITH THEM?
Unfortunately, no. The independent swimming program with only the teacher and child in water focuses on developing specific skills and techniques that enable your child to propel through the water independently.
DO YOU RUN ON SCHOOL TERMS?
No, Swimmattix runs on its own TWO PART Calendar: January till June & then July to December. (Please refer to our app for the exact dates for the year.) We do not teach on Public Holidays.
WHY ARE LEARN TO SWIM CLASSES ONLY 15 MINUTES?
Young children learn better in shorter classes. Our lessons are very carefully put together to make use of all 15 minutes. Remember these are small bodies and they get tired too.
DO BABIES UNDER 6 MONTHS REALLY SWIM FOR FREE?
Provided you join our Baby Class 2 (6-18months) for at least 2 months, Babies who swim in our Baby Class 1 (0-5months) do not pay for anything. This is a FREE CLASS. We start from 3 weeks!
WHAT ARE MY PAYMENT OPTIONS?
Lessons are paid upfront for the month at a FIXED flat monthly rate. If you join in the middle of the month, you will be billed a per lesson rate until the new month when you will be moved onto our flat monthly rate. The monthly rate does not change due to Public Holiday.
WHAT IS YOUR MAKE UP POLICY?
Unfortunately lessons missed are considered forfeited. We do not make up lessons missed.
HOW MUCH NOTICE DO I NEED TO GIVE IF I WANT TO TERMINATE/POSTPONE LESSONS?
We require that TWO months WRITTEN notice is given in the event of terminating or postponing lessons. (email@example.com)
WHY DO YOU REQUIRE TWO MONTHS NOTICE?
There are two reasons. First, due to the popularity of our programs there tends to be a long waiting list with families ready to fill an open spot. By getting two mouths notice, we are able to give them ample time to adjust their schedules and, often, cancel other swim lessons with another swim schools so they can start with Swimmattix. Second, the two months provides us time to determine our staffing needs, supplies and other operational adjustments.
HOW OFTEN IS MY CHILD ASSESSED?
Your child is assessed every lesson, however a full report is only available on our app at the end of each month. Actual handing out of certificates happen at the end of Part 1 and Part 2 of the Swimmattix Calendar.
WHY DOES SWIMMATTIX RECOMMEND YEAR LONG SWIMMING?
We recommend year-round swimming lessons for children because the continuity helps them retain more knowledge for a longer period of time. With the gap created by seasonal swimming lessons, children tend to regress from their swimming skill level; this ultimately results in having to refresh those skills before they can build new skills.
WHY DO WE HAVE A DOUBLE-NAPPY POLICY?
Health & Safety is our number one concern here at Swimmattix Swim School and we follow the STA guidelines when it comes to health and safety in our pools. In the event of a spill we have no choice but to cancel lessons for the rest of the day, in order to treat and test the pool. This is a costly exercise and an inconvenience to all those affected including teachers, parents & swimmers as lessons have to be made up on a alternative day. Therefore we have a double-nappy policy (see below)
All children under the age of 2, or those who are not fully potty-trained regardless of age must wear a tight-fitting Splash Nappy**(or similar alternative) with a close-fitting leg and waist ribs on top with a "Huggies Little Swimmer" underneath it. (cloth nappies, regular nappies, are not acceptable) A full fitted costume is still required to be worn over all this, a swimmers nappy is not seen as a costume, and swimmers will not be allowed into the pool if the above is not adhered too.
*Huggies Little Swimmers - can be purchased at any Dischem Store. | **Splash Nappies can be bought from Swimmattix Swim School directly.
CAN YOU GUARANTEE MY REQUEST FOR MY FAVORITE TEACHER?
Some of our students and many of our parents have become attached to their teachers. Our teachers are wonderful and we continue to make decisions regarding where teachers are placed based on our effort to provide the best swim experience possible for everyone. We will always try to accommodate these needs. We cannot guarantee a teacher as space is based on availability, with that being said Swimmattix strives to deliver the same standard of teaching throughout and which ever teacher you end up going to - we know you will love them!
WHAT BENEFITS DO BABIES HAVE FROM SWIMMING LESSONS?
The earlier the better! Research suggests that the earlier one starts their children in swim lessons the more significant the benefits benefits are, such as:
- Boosts development of the whole child (early year round lessons for young children accelerated their development physically, intellectually, and emotionally).
- Children who swim consistently from infancy are significantly stronger and more coordinated.
- Children scored higher for intelligence and problem solving, which carries over into excellent academic achievement.
- Emotionally, children have been found to have more self-discipline, greater self-control and an increase in desire to succeed.
- Children rated higher in self-esteem and were more independent and comfortable in social situations than non-swimmers.
- Swim lessons for babies and toddlers improve their physical development.
- Baby swimmers develop better balance, movement and grasping techniques than non-swimmers.
